Autumn

Autumn is here. This is deeply pleasing.

Mornings of sharp, bright sunshine. Breath you can see in the air, giving you feedback that you are alive.

Crisp leaves underfoot. The need to wear a coat and boots. Glossy chestnuts by the dozen, so shiny they seem to have been polished by Mother Nature... Perfectly-formed acorns, the targets of skittery squirrels.

The spectrum of colours... leaves blazing with fire before they die. Ivy, climbing up walls, turning scarlet for a few precious weeks in a scintillating display. Stunning.

The comfort of getting home from spending a day out, revelling in being warm and cosy.

Beautiful.

  2. Yes, beautiful. And a rather beautiful description, too, Mellifluous Dark. You're very good, you know. This was quite a melty wee post, love it.

Plus, goodness me, the colours in the photograph. How utterly vibrant and amazing. Thanks, Londoner, you've made the disappearance of summer seem a lot less painful. To autumn we go, Mellano, to autumn......

  3. Hey Minx... Oh, how I devoured that curry. I was ravenous. I think the delivery chap thought I was nuts as I almost fell to the floor to thank him for bringing me my source of tummy-happiness...

Pony Pere! Why, thank you for your kind words. I am hugely pleased that you found my post melty. I never know whether I just ramble, or what, but it all needs to come out of my head, this stuff.

I was gutted that my camera had run out of battery power today on a lovely long walk. My goodness, the sun (it was so warm!), the leaves, the beauty of this season. My God, it turns me to mush. I am verily in love with autumn.

  4. You're very welcome, Mellifloatingleaf Dusk. Like I say, you're good.

It's sometimes a wee bit tricky to strike a balance, though, isn't it? I just love to ramble, but feel mindful of the poor loons who might actually read the stuff. (That's one reason, incidentally, that I like you so much, because you don't seem to mind the occasional ramble-splurge. Oh. I'm not saying that you rambled here, by the way, far from it. This was an effortlessly warming and concise post - just to be clear.)

Anyway, the main thing is that I know what you mean. This stuff needs to come out, doesn't it? I can't really stop it, sometimes, and it's always a pleasure to read the inside of your head. Word up, Mellifluous.

Never you be minding about the camera battery running out, either. It's in your mind, MD, and that's the most important thing.

Wait. I am being way too kind and friendly tonight. God, I just can't seem to help myself. Have a peaceful night's sleep. (see what I mean?)

  5. Hei Ms Dark, is that top picture of the leaves actually falling? Pretty fab.

Are you, by any chance, born in the autumn? I am, and I have thought having first primal memories that date back to that season may add to my liking it. Then again, I'm a sucker for everything dating back to a primal experience.

Hope your weekend is lovely, London Chick

  7. TPE, Pony, Lord, good morning! I am going to have to start paying you if you keep on complimenting my post like this. Seriously, though, thanks muchly. The rambling thing... well, sometimes my posts seem to be sum-up-able in a few pars and, at others, when catharsis is needed, I find my fingers tapping away for quite a while. I certainly don't think you should worry about rambling – us loons like reading your words, as is apparent by the plethora of comments!

Hei Anna! And how are you, lovely Finn? I am not sure about that top picture – it isn't one of mine. I have seriously *got* to take some more pics today. I think it's all I can manage (sleep was elusive last night)... I was not born in autumn, but in the height of summer. For me, autumn has always heralded new things – new jobs, new term at school (I loved going back to school after the summer holidays with my new pencil case etc...), and physically, as an adult at any rate, I seem to breathe better in autumn air. It somehow gives me clarity. I was conceived, I guess, in late autumn!! So I think you may have something there.

Hello, Preetha, thank you, and how are you? It's always lovely to find a post from you. The internet is wonderful...

  8. Oh, Ms D, the starting of school is what ruined autumn for me for decades - much longer than I actually attended school. Just about over that particular angsty trauma now. You either went to a nicer school or, I don't know, were more of a swot than I (swot) (is that the right spelling? My spelling's been all over the place lately. If I have called you something nasty instead of a bookish kid who studied diligently for her exams, then I am profusely sorry. Never forget, I am the forrin geerl).

Anyway, enjoy what's left of your weekend.

  9. Me, a swot, Anna? Not sure about that. My schooldays were mixed – some delicious times (English, French and biology) and some days/weeks were just dire. By no means idyllic.

I am a sucker for a challenge, though, and somehow was always optimistic and hopeful that the new beginning would bring good things.

I am the same about New Year, which many people despise. I actually like it – it's a demarcation. Not saying I like to go out and celebrate it in that enforced manner where you pay £50 for a drink and the 'privilege' of being in a roomful of sweaty people. Ugh, no. Too depressing. I suppose it's just the quiet marking of a new chapter for me, and the splendour of the unknown. A clean sheet of paper, just for a while...

But, yes, dear Finn, you are right – I was (am) kind of bookish. But my word, I was rubbish at certain subjects...

Hope you've had a lovely weekend.
